"ππͺπ΅π©πͺπ― π΅π©π¦ πΈπ’πππ΄"
An environment concept painting of a fantasy world project I'm working on called "ππ’πΊπ’πΈ π’π΅ ππ―π₯π’πΊπ°π¨". This piece was inspired by the architecture and imposing ruin walls of intramuros.
Mentored by Jose Vega.
I've always wanted to try out environment concept paintings and venture other avenues aside from characters designs but was too afraid how to begin. I knew I needed help from one of the bests out there, I need to experience it, feel the process and fail. Until I saw Jose Vega's mentorship post. Took it in a heartbeat and I'll take it again if I have the chance!
I wanted to share what I've learned during this 6-week mentorship.
During the class Jose let me pick his brain. He did an amazing job walking me through his entire process, being open with his mindset how to start and end a project like this, efficiency in world building, industry techniques and Do's and don'ts. Just straight to the point art creation!
This includes:
-Gathering limited references from; real-life, other artists work, film, lighting set-ups, shapes and texture.
- Creating thumbnails, which he does not do since he goes straight to 3D. but I did sketch my own thumbnails anyway since I haven't developed that 3D intuition yet.
-making assets in blender. I did mine in VR.
-texturing
-kitbashing
-lighting and composing the scene, appropriate to the narrative and staying with it!
-Rendering and refining techniques, to help the image comunicate effectively.
My experience creating this piece was really brutal not gonna lie. Weekly assignmets, submission times, the urge of changing your mind mid-project. It's a first for me going through a structured process like this. I've always been impatient and want to see the end result as early as possible, but here I learned to control and trust the process even more. Just by staying the course, you'll learn a lot about weaknesses and gain solutions to improve them in the future. I highly recommend trying out mentorships like this if you have the chance, getting out of your comfort zones once in a while may unlock things you didn't think you can do previously and it's such an amazing feeling when you complete it.
